- Oil paint dries through the absorption of oxygen. This is a chemical process. Once the paint is entirely dry this oxidation process does not stop but continues in an ageing process. Eventually this can be visible as crackling.
- The purpose of varnish is to create a protective layer to the finished painting, to protect the finished painting from atmospheric contamination, to protect finished painting from dirt and dust and evens out the painting's final appearance, making it equally glossy or matt (depending on your choice of varnish)
